Establishment of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine was established as per the NCISM Act, 2020 (No. 14 of 2020) through an extraordinary Gazette notification in Part (ii), Section 1, dated 21.09.2020.
Objectives of the NCISM Act The NCISM Act aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Improving Access to Quality and Affordable Medical Education:
- Enhancing access to quality and affordable medical education.
- Ensuring the availability of sufficient and high-quality healthcare professionals in the Indian System of Medicine throughout the country.
- Promoting Equitable and Universal Healthcare:
- Encouraging equitable and universal healthcare.
- Promoting a community health perspective.
- Making the services provided by medical professionals in the Indian System of Medicine accessible and affordable to all citizens.
- Supporting National Health Goals:
- Aligning with national health goals and objectives.
- Encouraging Latest Medical Research and Contributions:
- Encouraging medical professionals to adopt the latest medical research in their work.
- Facilitating their contribution to research efforts.
- Assessment and Maintenance of Standards:
- Conducting periodic and transparent assessments of medical institutions.
- Facilitating the maintenance of a medical register for practitioners of the Indian System of Medicine.
- Enforcing high ethical standards in all aspects of medical services.
- Flexibility and Grievance Redressal:

Conduction of Post-Graduate National Entrance Test The NCISM Act 2020 (Ref. Section 16 of NCISM Act 2020) governs the conduction of a uniform Post-Graduate National Entrance Test for admission to postgraduate courses in each discipline of the Indian System of Medicine (Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha) in all medical institutions.
